Michelle reflects: “With the Troubles we just saw men in balaclavas. Sometimes it was hard to know which side was which. I'm glad there’s peace now.” This arpillera was sewn by Michele in group workshops facilitated by Deborah Stockdale which were part of the associated activities following the exhibition “Stitching and Unstitching the Troubles” in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, 2012. The theme of the quilt relates to the members’ personal journeys of grief and despair; from the darkness of bereavement and loss to the light of hope for the future. This journey is depicted symbolically in the quilt. The piece takes the form of an embroidered tie dyed quilt using appliqué and featuring a lighthouse. The lighthouse represents guidance and protection through dangerous and troubled waters, and has been adopted by WAVE as its logo.
