The Bill of Rights
Northern Ireland quilt, by Caw/Nelson Drive, Tullyalley Women’s Centre &
Galliagh Women’s Group, 2010
Photograph: Martin Melaugh
This piece was completed for the Women Building Bridges art exhibition and
programme celebrating International Women’s day in Derry/Londonderry, 2010. In
this quilt, women emerging from The Troubles, demand equality and progress on
several issues. Stark messages such as “No to all violence”, “Education no
boundaries”, “Rights of the child to be safe” and “Equality”, complement equally
strong symbols.
The women from the three groups, the majority of them new to textile work,
discussed during a residential which issues to depict in their quilt. On their return,
they visited each other’s centres to continue the work. This, according to
Rosemary Doherty of the Galliagh Women’s group, was a very valuable part of the
process: “For some women this was their first time in each other’s centres ...it
opened us up to other cultures and led to great friendships”. This quilt is now on
permanent display in the office of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission,
having been presented in 2011 to the Chief Commissioner.

The Side of the Wall
Northern Ireland arpillera by Michele Connor, Fab Femmes, Ballymoney, 2013
The balaclava covered face, framed by a gun is the stark image portrayed in this
arpillera, half of which is bordered by the Union Jack flag and half by the Tricolour
flag. Michelle reflects: “With the Troubles we just saw men in balaclavas.
Sometimes it was hard to know which side was which. I'm glad there’s peace
now.”
This arpillera was sewn by Michele in group workshops facilitated by Deborah
Stockdale which were part of the associated activities following the exhibition
“Stitching and Unstitching the Troubles” in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, 2012.
Reflecting on the group process and on group discussions that seeded pieces
such as Michelle’s, Deborah comments: “ I think Michele’s reflection typified the
ambiguity of the various paramilitary operations, the roadblocks, the raids, all the
terrorist activities people lived with for so very long in Northern Ireland.”

Visions of the Community Quilt
Bluebell Arts Project, facilitated by Tina Mc Laughlin, 2008
Photograph: Martin Melaugh
Visions of the Community Quilt was an initiative of the Derry/Londonderry based
Bluebell Arts Project, facilitated by Tina Mc Laughlin, in the summer of 2008.
The process of designing and making the quilt was a vehicle for local women to
discuss and define the history, vision and aspirations of their community, ten years
after the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. Vibrant colours were chosen,
influenced by Tina who was inspired by seeing arpilleras exhibited in Pilots Row.
The eye in each corner represents “community vision” and the people represent
friends and family as the most important component of a good community. The
figures are of different genders, race and generations. Many of the patches
represent the identity of the local community and hopes for a peaceful future.
A central quote on the quilt states: “A quilt should keep you safe and warm, so
should a good community. We are all patches on that quilt.”
